I surprised my boyfriend with a trip to 1BSI and it was just the medicine we needed. A getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. So peaceful, beautiful trails, a lovely canoe ride in to the island and the A-frame was perfect for what we needed. Comfortable, beautifully constructed with a toasty warm burning wood-stove + all the amenities a “glamper” would need. We love the idea of being self-sustainable with the composting toilet/pump shower (better in person) and sharing a sacred space with others to escape the modern world. Lots of thought went into 1BSI. It wasn’t just a place to stay, it was an EXPERIENCE! Thank you!

We had such a great stay in the A frame! It was a beautiful island and very clean. The communication was great. we got whatever we needed and very fast. The hard worker award goes to Kent and his partner!! The only bummer was that we had a late departure when leaving the island due to late arriving guests which messed with our scheduled massages we had planned for once we left the island. Kent felt badly about it and recommended other activities going on in the area we could possibly check out which was nice to mention. Overall we had a good time on the island and we will be back!

Spectacular! Our stay truly exceeded our expectations. Despite the other stays throughout the island you truly feel like you’re in your own private oasis.
The A-frame had the perfect gazebo for grilling and a supply cabinet fully stocked with everything you’d need. The outdoor fire pit was an excellent place for s’mores and even had a cooking surface for over-the-fire cooking.
The A-frame loft had one of the most comfortable beds we’ve been on and the futon came prepared if you need you need to covert it into a bed. The interior highlights were the hammock and indoor stove to keep us warm that we still reminisce over. My wife even joked about putting one in our home as soon as we returned home as it brought so much enjoyment.
Kent embodied everything you’d hope for in a host with his deep familiarity of the island and surround lake. What him and his crew have done to create an off the grid, sustainable experience is something I greatly admire and would highly recommend to others!

This is a very beautiful and comfortable stay. The host makes it very clear what to expect. The host is completely accommodating and helpful and cheerful and goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need. We always had everything we needed.
Our one night stay was going to end up being a rainy day and at the last minute we were able to go a day earlier and enjoy a beautiful sunny day on the island. The host bent over backward to accommodate that, and I appreciate it.
I would definitely stay here again.

Great island experience. I've never lived without electricity, but it's not hard work. Kent was very responsive to everything we needed! Recommend here!

We had a perfect stay in the A-frame! It fit all four of us comfortably (me, my husband, our 4yr old and our pup) and just the right fit of ‘camping’ for this stage! So nice to not pack everything. Was impressed by the battery packs that allowed us to have a powerful lantern and charge cell phone for all of our photo taking! Kent was amazing and restocked us with water and even lent us a wifi hotspot, although we ended up having great cell service too! The weather was also wonderful, we loved swimming to the meditation dock, canoeing around the island, fishing and relaxing in the hammock! … and the best part, you are welcome to stay after checkout! We continued to enjoy the late day until the afternoon, just took a later ferry ride back! Looking forward to returning in the future! PS, also appreciated the sense of humor sprinkled throughout!

If you are reading reviews about the 1BSI to convince yourself if you should make the trip, do it. It’s worth it especially if you love the outdoors/fishing.

We had two adults, two teens and one very active dog. Guess who was NOT thrilled with the no-plumbing no-electricity situation?!? But that’s the point- reconnect with nature and slow down. We even got them off their phones for a while. (Although internet is strong! Totally remote workable) The island is beautiful and serene and clean. A great escape from the hustle and bustle of DC (where we live). We fished in the canoe, wandered around in the kayaks….. Our dog Archie roamed the island (he is very friendly and we got permission from every other guest before we let him loose!) and he truly felt like a king. We’ve never seen him so happy. Don’t let the no-plumbing deter you- it is more than liveable and actually a strong reminder of the excess we live in during our usual lives. It is open to the public and there are other guest houses so it’s not totally a “private” island but it was rare to see other people and when we did everyone was super nice. Kent and Heather are *GREAT* hosts— kind, welcoming, accommodating…. And will do everything to make your stay wonderful. Thank you!
