The Island A-Frame is a gentle reminder that enough really is enough. Enough comfort, enough nature, enough quiet, and enough adventure to leave you feeling full instead of fried. Tucked into a wooded corner of 1 Big Sustainable Island, this cozy A-frame invites you to slow down: sleep deeply, cook simple meals, sway in a hammock, warm yourself by the woodstove, and listen as loons and crackling fires take turns filling the air.

If you want to truly unplug (BOTH metaphorically AND literally), 1BSI is the place. It's all the convenience of a hotel, but masquerading as camping. The beds (real beds) feel luxurious and comfy--better than your last hotel stay, probably. All the "stuff" you need (from kitchen stuff to furniture to kayaks) is already there for you. And even if you arrive in a rain storm, there's a clean, dry spot waiting for you when you get there. Hotel Camp-ifornia, I guess...
Yes, you might have to put shoes on to go to the toilet. But the compost toilets are clean, sanitary, smell-free, private, roomy (you can stretch your arms and not hit walls or ceiling), comfortable, with real, honest-to-goodness sinks with soap and water to wash with. It's a toilet, not an outhouse.
And a HOT shower. Also roomy, clean, yadda, yadda... You're unplugged from power, but not propane--you do have to spend a minute of light cardio to prime the literal pump, but it's such a rewarding minute. It's honestly cleaner and hotter than my shower at home.
Kent and the crew eliminate all the things that feel like camping chores, so you can spend more time relaxing.
Loved our stay here!! So relaxing, waterfront setting and very nice people on the island!
Had a blast in a beautiful place! Everything is so thoughtful and well-organized!
Just came back from our second trip to naughty dog island and can’t wait to go back next year!
We stayed at the last week of Oct, so the views of fall foliage were gorgeous. It was a bit too chilly to enjoy the kayaking/canoeing by then, but the Aframe stayed warm as long as we attended to the wood stove. There’s a gorgeous walk around the island to enjoy the sunrise/set with benches along the way. It was the perfect way to unplug and reset! Throughout our time we kept saying how glad we were to have picked this spot. The photos don’t do justice, and the hosts were extremely friendly and hospitable! And, yes, it’s true— the compostable toilet didn’t have an odor at all. We’ll definitely be back again & will recommend to others!!
Kent was an excellent communicator from the very beginning, preparing us for our stay at his off-grid retreat with a detailed list of everything available on the island. He also shared recommendations for activities, gave us some wonderful history about how the Island came to be, and his warm, light-hearted emails made an off-grid getaway feel easy, safe, and fun.
Each of the island’s five sites is unique and beautifully situated, and even though others were staying elsewhere on the island, it still felt completely secluded — like we were in our own world. The beds were incredibly cozy and comfortable, and having unlimited access to wood for warmth, the fire, and cooking made even the chilly nights feel relaxing and memorable.
This was an unforgettable escape for our 18th anniversary. We are so grateful to have found this magical, sustainable island getaway. Kent and Heather have created something truly special.
The stay was beautiful and Kent was a great host! He made sure we had everything we needed, helped with luggage and had ice packs readily available. The space was clean and peaceful. Would highly recommend!
Awesome place to get away! Beautiful a-frame structure that was very comfortable and well thought out. Kent was a great host and has a great system for getting people and their gear out to the island and to where everything needs to be. There's everything you could possibly need within short walking distance on the island. Kent was very easy to contact and very prompt with responses. can't wait to go back to 1BSI!
