Floating Island Retreat: Lakefront Cabin w/ Sauna

A unique nature stay for outdoor retreats on Annabessacook Lake in Monmouth, Maine — near Winthrop.

Quick Answer: Floating Island Retreat: Lakefront Cabin w/ Sauna is The Nautilus is a floating love letter to reinvention — a cabin, a tiny home, and a houseboat all rolled into one quietly wonderful idea. Moored beside 1 Big Sustainable Island, it lets you wake to gentle waves at your door, watch the sunrise from bed, and step straight onto a floating porch for morning coffee. It’s proof that with a little imagination (and a lot of care), something old can become something entirely new on Annabessacook Lake in Monmouth, Maine.

We had a wonderful time unplugging for an adults only getaway. My husband really enjoyed the fishing and boating. We loved cooking our food over campfire and sitting on the dock relaxing. The view of the sunrise and Hunter's Moon was to die for. It was a short paddle to the shore if we wanted to go into town for anything. Everything was as described, the host was amazing and communicated well. The island was peaceful and at times we met people to chat with out on the water. We will definitely go back with the full crew!

The most amazing stay!! Perfect for a secluded few days - the sunrise from bed was AMAZING and even though it was chilly it wasn’t difficult to keep a fire running and stay cozy. Would LOVE to come back in the summer for even more time - Kent was so helpful and we really did have everything we needed (the grill was awesome and the French press was appreciated). We also loved the dogs! We’ll be sure to be back and maybe try some of the other properties on the island. Thanks for a wonderful stay!!!

The magic he has created on this island is recognizable from the moment you are greeted at the docks. My stay at the nautilus was short but left me wanting to experience more, and I will definitely be coming back to 1BSI. We canoed on a peaceful lake without a soul in sight, had a campfire while it was raining because the tree canopy kept us pretty dry, played cards within the light of the wood-fire furnace, and slept to the waves of the storm that passed through the night. In terms of sustainability, it can’t get much easier than this. Everything is prepared for you upon arrival: clean sheets, dry and cut firewood, dishes, lights, propane, and the list goes on and on. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway. Thank you for such an incredible stay 1BSI!

Ahhhh we are rested, restored, and reinvigorated after spending a week at The Nautilus on 1BSI! Such a special find, a hidden gem. If you need a break from the grind, there's no better place. We had the greatest adventure in the wild with our dogs and truly appreciated the care and thoughtfulness that Kent and Heather provided. We are already looking at dates to come back!

We arrived as last minute guests when a trip to FL was interrupted by a hurricane (Oct. 2024). Kent and Heather are fabulous hosts. Unfortunately, we were supposed to stay for 6 days but had to cut our trip short due to a family emergency. They responded quickly when we said we needed to pack up and get a ride off the island. We loved talking with them on our boat rides. They have a hard job keeping up with all 5 sites but always positive. There were great solar lights in the nautilus and also a really efficient wood stove to keep warm and to even cook on. The dock was the best. Didn’t love the composting toilet and found it too far away and up a great climb. They could not help with our one night of pouring rain that kept us awake as it pelted the metal roof, or the red squirrel dropping acorns on it. We thank them for their accommodations but probably wouldn’t go again given the “camp style” life. Great if you really want to get away from everything, including modern conveniences.

What an incredibly unique experience! We brought our own boat for an early October, one night stay. Let me walk you through the pros and cons.
Pros -
-The Nautilus had breathtaking views, sitting right on the water, with absolute privacy. Incredible, memorable.
-Calm lake, lapping waves, fall foliage = perfection
-The woodstove kept the place toasty during the 40's overnight lows, and added to the charm. We even cooked breakfast on it!
- We were able to dock our boat right at our room
Cons
- The parking lot was very tight for our boat trailer with some steep dropoffs (20' boat and big truck). I had to disconnect the trailer and hand walk it in to place (with lucky help of one of the island team, Jen!), then reconnect. Consider yourself warned. A car would be fine.
- the fire pit area was not level, and challenging for two chairs
- The wood stove is small, and we had to refill it 2x overnight
- The hike to the toilet was longer and steeper than expected
-No sink in the unit
