We had the most relaxing time on 1 Big Sustainable Island. We enjoyed walking along the paths that wraps all the way around the island. There are plenty of spots along the way to sit and enjoy the views.
Our stay at the Oaktagon Treehouse was more than wonderful. Everything we needed was there. The woodstove kept the entire place toasty and the small kitchen plus grill outside were all we needed for cooking.
Kent was an absolute dream to work with. He was punctual and helpful. He provided us with more than enough drinking water and plenty of lanterns. He also helped us get our bags to and from the boat.
We are definitely coming back this summer with our kids and dog! Can’t wait!

A “peaceful retreat” is exactly what my family and I experienced. The hosts were very accommodating. Efficient communication took place before and during our stay. Check in and check out went very smoothly. The oaktogon is beautiful and the island is very nice. Can’t wait to go back in the summer next time!

We thoroughly enjoyed Kent's hospitality, the private island, the yurt and it's smart design and comfort. Everything about our adventure on 1 big sustainable island (1BSI) was delightful!

1BSI and the Oaktagon Treehouse are the perfect place for off-grid reconnection with nature and your loved ones. Jo and Kent are wonderful hosts! Communication was clear and the instructions provided - from navigating arrival to how to operate the features of the Oaktagon - were stellar. We had a blast swimming off the floating dock, played card games by candlelight, fell asleep and woke up to the sounds of the loons calling, watched an eagle family and osprey hunt, and spent quality time connecting with the surroundings and each other.
Just like any other outdoor camping, bring bug spray (the mosquitos didn't bother us down by the water or on windier days, but under the tree canopy they descended). The floating dock is awesome for swimming. The Oaktagon glows beautifully at night when the candles are lit. We did bring headlamps which were super helpful for navigating the paths and house in the dark.

If we have one word to describe our week stay at the yurt on 1 Big Sustainability Island and the whole experience it would be “wonderful!”. It starts with the short pontoon ride from the dock to the island. Kent and Jo are there to warmly greet you. They will provide answers to your most immediate questions (how many folks have vacationed on an island? – so naturally, plenty of questions).
There is no electricity, and at best 1-bar mobile coverage (for us T-Mobile users). You are materially “off-the-grid” and your activities are yours for you to define. Yet, as we discovered they ended up being boundless. Without the distractions that we have in our everyday lives, one cannot help but be “present”. Our activities ranged from a morning swim, an afternoon kayaking or canoeing around the lake and an evening swim again. Being off the grid we found plenty of time for reading, cooking, strolling around the island, sitting along one of the islands several docks or the bench on the aptly named Sunset Rock – all while taking in the nature around us. Bundled in the hammock, lounging on the couch or rocker chair, or sitting on the dock with toes in the water all provided tranquil places for enjoying a book or magazine.
The stove top, outdoor grill and the outdoor firepit provide plenty of styles for cooking. Evenings included lying on the dock, star gazing, or sitting by the roaring firepit roasting marshmallows (great supply of easily lite kindling and seasoned logs) – all while the mournful call of loons resonated across the lake.
Kent and Jo have thought things down to the smallest details. And as they say, if something is amiss, let them know so they can address. Being sustainable did not entail lacking in basic comforts, but rather simply being mindful of sharing the precious natural resources of this island and our earth. Who would expect the comfy queen size bed in the yurt, the large couch to stretch out in, or to gently rock in the hammock hung from the oak tree in the center of the yurt (Hilton take notice!).
Jo and Kent are gracious hosts as well as knowledgeable not only about the island habitat, but the region and its environs. As by the name of the island, they seek to remind us that the beauty surrounding us can be shared while living in unison with nature – and in doing so we enjoyed a wonderful “get away” island, that gave us back a bit of the simple life that we miss.

What a wonderful way to spend a weekend. We loved being able to explore the trails on the island! The best part was being able to have a dock to ourselves to watch the stars and have our morning coffee. The bed was super comfortable and we also enjoyed listening to the rain on the roof at night and the loons on the lake. We would love to come back sometime and explore even more. The bed was super comfortable and we loved listening to the rain on the roof at night.
It was nice to have a shower on the island - just make sure to follow all of the directions for it to work correctly. Also, while the kitchens were well stocked with essentials, it might still be missing some of your essential items you use at home. So, plan for simple meals. Also, be ready for composting toilets! They can get a bit smelly if not used correctly - but still wonderful to have on site.
Kent was incredibly responsive to all of our questions and helped us out when we needed to be resupplied on a couple of items. The ferry to the island and check-in was easy and quick. The assistance he provided to help get our luggage to our car and to the yurt was great so we didn't have to worry about hauling everything ourselves.

We would definitely visit again! It was a perfect spot for a weekend getaway.
